This seminar series is part of the research project “Community building at the cinema: towards a decentred and entangled history of cinema-going” (ArTeC-UPL)
At the crossroads of history, film studies and anthropology, this project intends to shift the focus away from Western Europe and the United States in the study of cinema exhibition and reception. It seeks to engage in transnational and comparative research on a global scale, with a particular focus on the communal identities of cinemagoers in the first 20th century. It aims to examine cinematic intra- and inter-community interactions by concentrating on non-hegemonic media industries. Our intention is to grasp cinema audiences as continuously changing collectives, characterized by a perpetual restructuration and reinvention, shaped by the spectators’ cultural, ethnic, national and religious identities.
Ce séminaire s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet de recherche « Faire communauté(s) face à l’écran : vers une histoire décentrée et croisée du spectacle cinématographique » (ArTeC-UPL).
À la croisée de l’histoire, des études cinématographiques et de l’anthropologie, ce projet souhaite décentrer l’étude du spectacle cinématographique, qui s’est polarisée jusqu’à présent sur l’Europe occidentale et les États-Unis. Il propose d’engager une recherche croisée et comparée à l’échelle globale, avec comme prisme privilégié les communautés d’appartenance des spectateurs au premier xxe siècle. Il vise à examiner les interactions cinématographiques intra- et inter-communautaires en se concentrant sur les industries médiatiques non hégémoniques. Notre intention est de saisir les publics de cinéma comme des collectifs en permanente restructuration, variant notamment selon les identités culturelles, ethniques, nationales et religieuses des spectateurs qui le composent.
